about

This "album" is a collection of demos, covers, unfinished songs, and other various things from throughout our 5 year "career" as a band. If you're a completist, or just wanna hear how bad, though hilarious, we were when we weren't all polished up, then this is just the thing for you!

Tracks 1-11 are taken from "Cassette Tape #3." In the couple weeks leading up to our first show on 2/20/10, we made 8 separate cassette tape recordings of 8 different rehearsals and gave them out at the show. These are all from the 3rd cassette and represent at least the most complete, if not the best, version of those practices. "A Picture Postcard" is originally by The Promise Ring.

Track 12 is the literal first thing we ever wrote as The Ground Is Lava. In May of 2008, the three of us jammed a few times in the interest of just having fun and doing something different. At one of these sick jam seshes, our friend Alex played with us a little bit. She's not on this recording though. This is the only thing we ever came up with and we decided to call it The Ground Is Lava. Notice how the chorus section is exactly, 100% "Tiny Vessels" by Death Cab For Cutie. This was recorded on 5/22/08 by Andy Puch.

Track 13 is an unfinished song that we wrote and demoed around the same time as the bulk of the Bottle Rockets songs. This was recorded by Chris Mack.

Track 14 is a cover of "Girlfriend In A Coma" by The Smiths done in the style of The Misfits. In 2010 we played a Halloween cover show under this guise and it was gloriously silly and fun. This was recorded by Chris Mack sometime in 2011.

Track 15 is an unfinished song from early 2013 in which we channeled our inner Bloc Party. This was recorded on Jon's phone.

Track 16 is another unfinished song from the Bottle Rocket sessions. Also recorded on Jon's phone.

Track 17 is a song that we wrote within the last year or so of being a band that we never got around to writing lyrics for. This one was recorded on Eric's phone.

Track 18 is a super chill acoustic version of "Excuse Me, Can You Fill My Void?" that Jon recorded through his iMac mic to send to our friend Danny one night back in 2012 or so.

Track 19 is our unheard masterpiece, our magnum opus, our greatest sonic achievement. Recorded by Chris Mack in 2011.

"Bunk Shit" is a phrase that our dear friend Jenna O'Brien said many times on that tour, mostly in reference to some shitty fireworks she bought in Tennessee.
